Crown Guarding Bunker

An underground cellar system at the foot of Calvary Hill, where the Holy Crown was kept for three months during the Szálasi government.
Crown Guarding Bunker
At the end of 1944, coronation badges had to be evacuated to the western part of the country. During the evacuation, the Holy Crown went first to Veszprém and then to Kőszeg, where it arrived on the night of December 6, 1944 (it was first placed in the gymnasium of the Ferenc Gyurátz Lutheran Girls’ High School - today an agricultural secondary school). The "Crown Guarding Bunker" at the foot of Calvary Hill commemorates the fact that the Holy Crown was kept here from December 1944 to March 1945. Then, on the news of the bomb attack on Szombathely - anticipating that Kőszeg could be hit by a similar air attack - it was decided to take the regalia to the shelter built in Velem.

The museum is closed now.
